President Truman, shown here in the Oval Office, served as United States president from 1945 to 1953.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Directly following Truman’s presidency, United States citizens felt the need for a new and different type of commander, one who would hopefully ease tensions with Russia in the years following the start of the Cold War. With the irresistible slogan “I Like Ike,” Dwight D. Eisenhower easily won victory in the presidential election of 1952. A midwesterner at heart, like Truman, President Eisenhower grew up in Abilene, Kansas. He was born in 1890 to a poor, devout Mennonite family that believed strongly in pacifism. To his mother’s dismay, Eisenhower entered the US Military Academy at West Point. Following graduation, he had hoped to be deployed, but World War I ended just before he was scheduled to go. He served as a military aid to General John J. Pershing, and later to General Douglas MacArthur, eventually being promoted to captain, receiving the Distinguished Service Medal. Between World War I and World War II, Eisenhower graduated from the army’s Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Two years later, he graduated from the Army War College. During World War II, Eisenhower was made a full general and began preparing strategy for an Allied invasion of Europe; on D-day, he was the Supreme Commander of the troops invading France. In December 1944, Eisenhower was made a five-star general. Upon his return to the states, Eisenhower worked under President Truman for two years, directing the demobilization of the wartime army. Then, after leaving active duty, Eisenhower excelled as president of Columbia University and commander of NATO forces. In 1952, he was finally persuaded to make a run for the presidency.
